The term neurodiversity has become increasingly common in education, professional learning, and social media. As educators, we are hearing more conversations about designing inclusive learning environments that recognize neurological differences rather than viewing them as deficits. Yet one question continues to spark thoughtful discussion: Does giftedness belong under the umbrella of neurodiversity? The answer depends on who you ask.
Understanding Neurodiversity
The neurodiversity movement emerged in the late 1990s as a way of recognizing that variations in how the brain develops and functions are a natural part of human diversity (Singer, 1999). Rather than viewing neurological differences solely through a medical or deficit-based lens, neurodiversity encourages us to recognize both strengths and challenges associated with different ways of thinking and learning (Armstrong, 2012).
Conditions commonly discussed within neurodiversity include autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, Tourette syndrome, and other neurological differences (Armstrong, 2012). Many educators now use neurodiversity as a framework for designing more flexible, inclusive classrooms that support a wide range of learners. Where does giftedness fit? This is where perspectives begin to differ.
Perspective 1: Giftedness Is a Form of Neurodivergence
Many gifted education scholars, psychologists, and practitioners argue that giftedness represents a qualitatively different way of processing information, not simply "more intelligence" (Silverman, 2013).
Gifted learners often demonstrate:
- Heightened intensity and sensitivity
- Asynchronous development
- Rapid pattern recognition
- Complex reasoning
- Divergent thinking
- Advanced curiosity
- Unique executive functioning profiles
- Increased sensory or emotional responsiveness
These characteristics have been described throughout the gifted education literature for decades (Dabrowski, 1972; Silverman, 2013). Researchers have long noted that gifted individuals often process information differently from their same-age peers, leading many educators and psychologists to view giftedness as one form of neurodivergence (Silverman, 2013). This perspective has become increasingly common among professionals working with gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) students. It also helps explain why many gifted learners report feeling "different" from their age peers.
Perspective 2: Neurodiversity Should Primarily Describe Disability
Others take a more cautious approach. Some researchers and disability advocates argue that the neurodiversity movement was created primarily to promote acceptance and inclusion for individuals whose neurological differences have historically been misunderstood, stigmatized, or pathologized (Walker, 2021).
From this perspective, neurodiversity discussions should remain centered on conditions that often involve barriers to daily functioning or require accommodations under disability frameworks. Some express concern that broadly including giftedness may unintentionally shift attention away from the advocacy efforts of individuals with disabilities who continue to face significant systemic barriers (Walker, 2021). This perspective does not deny that gifted learners think differently. Rather, it questions whether giftedness should be classified alongside neurological disabilities under the same umbrella.
Why the Conversation Matters
At first glance, this debate may seem largely semantic. In reality, the terminology influences how educators identify, understand, and support students.
If giftedness is viewed as a form of neurodivergence, educators may be more likely to:
- Recognize that advanced learners can experience genuine social-emotional challenges.
- Design learning environments that accommodate differences in thinking, not just differences in achievement.
- Better understand why gifted students sometimes mask their abilities or struggle with belonging.
- Appreciate that exceptional cognitive strengths do not eliminate the need for individualized support.
On the other hand, maintaining distinctions between giftedness and disability reminds us that students experience vastly different barriers and educational needs. Labels should never replace thoughtful, individualized understanding.
The Importance of Defining Our Terms
As the language surrounding neurodiversity evolves, one important caution is worth keeping in mind: before using the term, we should establish a shared understanding of what we mean.
Today, the words
neurodiversity and
neurodivergent are used differently across research communities, professional organizations, schools, and families (Walker, 2021). Without a common definition, well-intentioned conversations can quickly become confusing.
For example, a parent may describe their child as neurodivergent because they have been diagnosed with ADHD. Another family may use the same term to describe their autistic child. Still another may identify their gifted child as neurodivergent because they experience the world through qualitatively different patterns of thinking, learning, and emotional intensity. None of these families are necessarily using the term incorrectly, they may simply be operating from different definitions.
This distinction becomes even more important when discussing twice-exceptional (2e) learners. A child may be both gifted and have ADHD, autism, or another disability. In these cases, the student's neurocognitive profile cannot be understood through a single label. Their strengths and challenges interact in complex ways, requiring individualized educational planning rather than assumptions based on any one characteristic.
For educators, the takeaway is simple:
don't assume everyone in the conversation shares the same definition of neurodiversity or neurodivergence. Whether participating in an IEP meeting, collaborating with colleagues, or partnering with families, taking a moment to clarify how these terms are being used can prevent misunderstandings and foster more productive dialogue.
Ultimately, our goal is not to win a debate over terminology but to ensure that every learner's unique cognitive profile is recognized and supported. Clear definitions create clearer conversations, and clearer conversations lead to better educational decisions for students.
The Importance of Twice-Exceptionality
One area where terminology becomes especially important is the discussion of twice-exceptionality (2e). Within the gifted education literature, the term twice-exceptional has traditionally referred to students who are both gifted and have one or more disabilities, such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dysgraphia, or another learning difference (NAGC, 2024; Baum et al., 2017). These students often require educational programming that both develops their advanced abilities and provides appropriate supports for their disabilities.
Outside of gifted education, however, the term is sometimes used more broadly to describe individuals with two exceptionalities, regardless of whether giftedness is one of them. In some professional communities, twice-exceptional simply refers to an individual with two exceptionalities, whether or not giftedness is one of them. For example, a student with ADHD who is also blind, or a student with autism and a significant hearing impairment, may also be described as twice-exceptional. Again, this highlights why establishing a shared definition is so important before engaging in conversations about programs or services.
For students who are both gifted and have disabilities, strengths and challenges often mask one another (Baum et al., 2017). A student may appear average because exceptional reasoning compensates for a learning disability. Another may have significant disabilities that overshadow remarkable intellectual potential. Others may experience "double masking," where giftedness conceals a disability while the disability conceals giftedness, resulting in neither exceptionality being recognized (Foley Nicpon et al., 2011).
Regardless of the definition being used, the underlying principle remains the same:
students are complex individuals whose strengths and support needs cannot be understood through any label. Effective educational planning requires looking beyond labels to understand the whole learner.
What This Means for Schools
Whether or not your district formally considers giftedness part of neurodiversity, several principles remain essential (NAGC, 2019; Peters & Matthews, 2016):
Recognize that gifted learners are more than high achievers.
- Understand that advanced cognition often comes with unique social-emotional and educational needs.
- Avoid assuming that strong academic performance means a student requires no support.
- Design flexible learning environments that allow all students to demonstrate strengths in different ways.
- Continue learning from both gifted education research and disability studies, recognizing that each field contributes valuable perspectives.
- Be intentional about defining key terminology during conversations with families and colleagues.
Looking Beyond Labels
Perhaps the most productive question is not, "Is giftedness neurodivergent?" but rather: "How can we create schools where every learner's cognitive profile is understood, respected, and supported?"
Educational labels can guide services, but they should never define students (NAGC, 2019). Whether a child is autistic, has ADHD, is dyslexic, is twice-exceptional, is gifted, or is neurotypical, our responsibility remains the same:
to understand how that learner experiences the world and to provide opportunities for meaningful growth.
As research continues to evolve, so too will the language we use. What should remain constant is our commitment to seeing students as individuals whose strengths, challenges, and potential deserve thoughtful support.
Questions for Reflection
As educators, school psychologists, administrators, and families continue these conversations, consider:
- How does your district define neurodiversity?
- Does your definition explicitly include or exclude giftedness?
- How might differing definitions affect conversations with families?
- Do educators in your school share a common understanding of the term?
- How do we ensure that terminology supports, not distracts from, meeting students' individual needs?
Ultimately, the question of whether giftedness falls under the umbrella of neurodiversity depends largely on how each community defines the term. Rather than assuming everyone shares the same definition, educators and families should begin conversations by clarifying their language. Doing so shifts the discussion away from labels and back to what matters most: understanding and supporting each learner as an individual.
What matters most is that we remain thoughtful about our language, open to ongoing research, and committed to understanding each learner as an individual. When we begin conversations by clarifying our definitions, we create space for collaboration rather than confusion and keep the focus where it belongs: on helping every child thrive.
