Opportunities Create Growth

When people think about gifted students, they often focus on academics. While learning is important, I believe that opportunities outside the classroom play an equally important role in helping students grow. Throughout my time at Glen Hills Middle School, I have learned that the greatest growth happens when you are challenged to try something new and then given the support to succeed.
This year, I had the opportunity to participate in several activities that helped me develop skills that go beyond what can be learned from a textbook. One of those experiences was being a presenter on our Future City team. At first, I was unsure about joining the competition, especially because public speaking was outside of my comfort zone. With encouragement from Mrs. Murali and teammates, I accepted the challenge and became one of the presenters. Explaining our city design and answering questions from judges taught me how to communicate effectively, think on my feet, and work collaboratively to solve problems. Most importantly, it showed me that growth often comes from taking risks.
Another opportunity that helped shape me was participating in the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). Through NJHS, I completed community service projects and learned the importance of leadership and giving back to others. The experience helped me understand that success is not just about personal achievement, but also about making a positive impact on the community around you.
One of the most influential experiences this year was being a member of the Glen Hills wrestling team. Wrestling challenged me physically and mentally while teaching me valuable life skills. As one of the older team members, I had the chance to mentor younger wrestlers and help create a supportive team environment. Balancing daily practices, competitions, and schoolwork also strengthened my time management skills and taught me the importance of commitment and perseverance.
Looking back on my middle school experience, I realize that every opportunity helped me become a more confident student, leader, and teammate. These experiences would not have been possible without the support of my teachers, parents, and friends, who encouraged me to challenge myself and believe in my abilities.
I believe every student deserves opportunities that inspire them to explore their interests, develop new skills, and discover their potential. When schools provide students with meaningful experiences and supportive mentors, they create an environment where students can thrive. Opportunities do more than help students succeed – they help them discover who they can become.
