What If I Make a Mistake?: Helping Kids Learn the Power of Making Mistakes

Location: Sandstone 8

Description: As a clinical counselor who works with many gifted children, something that comes up often is the fear of making a mistake. Gifted children are used to being at the top, things coming easy, and learning quickly. Often the most intelligent children struggle the most when things do not go how they want. This session would introduce a workbook to use with children ages 6-10 about making mistakes. Alongside the workbook, we will learn what happens to our brain when we make mistakes. We call this growth mindset. We can learn together how to help our gifted children not be afraid of making mistakes, but embrace the inevitability of not always getting it right the first time.

Participant Outcomes: Helping teachers and parents help gifted students learn how to handle the stress of making a mistake with ease. They will learn what happens to our brain when it is challenged. Participants will feel more confident helping a child manage anxiety around perfectionism by learning ways of talking about it.
