Description:
“You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find that you get what you need.” (The Rolling Stones, 1969)An important concept in advocacy is “the ask.” While it is important to describe the problem when advocating for gifted and talented students, it is equally important to have a clear and achievable “ask.” What are the specific problems? Who has the power to help provide one or more solutions? What do you (and the students themselves) want them to do? Join members of WATG’s Government Action Committee to share your stories, learn about WATG’s past and future advocacy actions, create your own personal “asks” in a supportive environment, and take away a toolbox of strategies to advocate with educators, administrators, and legislators. You may not get exactly what you want, but one thing is certain: nothing will happen if you don’t ask!
Participant Outcomes: Participants will learn what has been accomplished with advocacy by WATG and share their own stories. They will receive support to create advocacy statements and requests that apply to their situations and their children. Participants will take away a toolbox of ideas on how to advocate for gifted children.
