Each year, the Wisconsin Association for Talented and Gifted celebrates Gifted Education Month during October. We celebrate with our annual fall conference with its informative and thought-provoking keynotes and workshops, with ceremonies and awards for service to our students and our field, proclamations from our Governor and Department of Public Instruction, and activities that promote camaraderie and sharing among our constituents. It is our hope that educators, parents, and caregivers will take this momentum back to their communities and share with others. Below are some ideas to get you started.
Spread the Word Online
- Follow WATG on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
- Invite friends, colleagues, and families to follow too.
- Use #WATG when sharing about our organization, activities, and services.
Advocate in Your Schools and Community
- Email your school board about the importance of gifted programming.
- Share the Gifted Education Month Proclamation in your district or community.
- Post facts and resources about gifted education in hallways, lounges, or community spaces (find great ideas on NAGC’s site or the WATG website).
Say Thank You
- Thank your superintendent, curriculum director, coordinator, or specialist for supporting gifted programming.
- Appreciate a teacher who works well with gifted students—public kudos encourage repeated good work!
- Drop a small treat in teachers’ mailboxes with a note of thanks (think Kudos bars, Smarties, Lifesavers, or pencils celebrating Gifted Education Month).
Lift Up Voices
- Share quotes from students on how gifted services make a difference.
- Post inspirational quotes from leaders about curiosity, creativity, and talent—get creative with where you place them (faculty lounges, bulletin boards, even bathroom stalls for maximum visibility!).
Promote Resources
- Gift a teacher a book about gifted education (better than another mug!).
- Ask your local library to add books about gifted education to their collection.
- Explore and share resources from WATG, NAGC, and other gifted organizations.
Join the Movement
- Become a member of WATG.org, NAGC.org, the World Council for Gifted and Talented, or SENG (Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted).
- Find your supportive people and work together—one person is a voice, two are “those people,” and three or more become a movement!
However you choose to celebrate gifted education month, know that we at WATG appreciate your efforts. The kids do, too!
