Talent Development

8/1/2021

The concept of “gifted education” has been controversial mainly because it implies an over-focus on high cognitive abilities and an exclusionary approach to other skills. The talent development view is a perspective shift from the long-standing belief in the importance of high cognitive abilities to a domain-oriented approach.

There are different talents in life that require different paths to reach their full potential. According to Olszewski-Kubilius and colleagues (2018), this talent developmental model has seven fundamental principles:
•           Abilities are domain-specific and malleable
•           Domains of talent have different trajectories.
•           Opportunities are essential for talent development
•           Opportunities must be taken
•           The importance of mental skills
•           The importance of social skills
•           Long-range thinking and planning for talent development

As we see above, it is important to create opportunities for students to develop their talents, and considering their mental and social skills is crucial in this model. The talent development view still values the importance of cognitive skills or general ability. This perspective gives us a more comprehensive outlook on the potential of humans. This new perspective would bring a broader range of students with a broader range of talents to the field of gifted education.

For those who want to read more about talent development, I highly recommend this book,
Olszewski-Kubilius, P., Subotnik, R., & Worrell, F. (2018). Talent development as a framework for gifted education: Implications for best practices and applications in schools. Waco, TX: Prufrock Press.

Talent development as a framework for gifted education: Implications for best practices and applications in schools.
