An Opportunity for Wisconsin's Gifted Students

It’s very telling that Newton’s most productive time was while he was under quarantine. Perhaps this is a time for our gifted kids to be particularly productive as well. After class assignments are completed, there may seem to be time left in their day/week. We have been hearing this regularly! We want to ask your kids: Is there a thought you haven’t had time to finish? Words or ideas not on paper? An experiment waiting to happen? A structure calling to be built? A game that needs developing? Creative juices needing an outlet? A group think tank idea that is taking off? What is it you’d like to show us? The WATG is providing a place for 4K-12th grade students to showcase their “quarantined time” creations, experiments, musings, and inventions. Our “Nothing Can Stop Me” movement is all about our students having an opportunity to stretch out and grow their ideas, and then having an audience with which to share! We are hoping that the kids might find time to shut off their screens and get creative! We want to support our gifted students during this national time of pausing. Let us share the work! Submissions can be individual, partners or groups.

Submissions

Ipek - 7th Grade
I like recycling and I used lonely socks to make these plushies. They are very cute and it is very fun to make them.

Abby - 2nd Grade
I finished my schoolwork early one week, so I decided to have fun imitating a few of my favorite book covers. I decided which books to do and called my mom in from her office each time to take the picture. The next day I did one with my dad.

Jaidyn- 7th Grade
Doing stop-motion short films gives me something to do. This one took me 6 hours to take over 700 pictures and then hours of editing to put it all together. My 3 year old little brother helped provide the voice acting for me and step-dad helped to edit the video. It was a fun project and I plan to make more of these.

Hazel - 2nd Grade
I really like narwhals. I think they are interesting...they even have a tusk!

Sahana - 4th Grade
I took water color and made a colorful star. I painted a black background and made little dots with white paint. I did this because I wanted to show even through dark times there is always a light shining through.

Hazel - 2nd Grade
I thought it would be nice to write a poem. I wanted it to be about birds so my mom would be happy.

Madeline - 3rd Grade
This is my project on a sloth, its habitat and adaptations. I made it for the Valley View Elementary Zoo. It includes a presentation and a diorama. Sloths are my favorite animal!

Lillian - 7th Grade
These are two contrasting string-drag paintings. I painted the canvases then put paint on the strings and laid them on the canvas, then I dragged them off in patterns. I did the paintings because I was really bored in quarantine and wanted to make something with my hands

Owen - 5th Grade
I make 3D paper projects using tape and colored pencils. I have made 10 of the small Minecraft figures and countless other non-Minecraft figures. I have been working with paper for years, I do origami and work with a lot of paper. I do this work because it is fun.

Ronin - 5th Grade
Ronin did 2 different science projects. The 1st one was to grow his own bacterial samples from swabs he took from a door knob. He grew the bacteria in his incubator and then studied it under his microscope. He wanted to determine whether Lysol actually kills bacteria or not. He did a comparison Petri dish and determined that Lysol does kill some bacteria. He did this just out of curiosity. He wants to be a microbiologist one day. His 2nd project was to research the molecular structure of Sulphuric Acid and then he built it with his molecular model building kit. He loves chemistry also. He was just curious what the molecular structure of Sulphuric Acid would look like. Afterwards, we made a video of him explaining it.

Graham - 3rd Grade
When my advanced learning teacher told us April was poetry month, I wrote this poem because it was sunny out.  I was reminded of the earth when I looked at the daffodil flowers in my front yard.  The poem includes things like flowers and seas.

Nolan - 7th Grade
Art helps me pass the time. I got new paint pens from my Grandma and Grandpa and they sent me canvases too. I've been looking up ideas on line and then trying to draw them. The QR code actually works if you open your camera on it.
