INSTRUCTIONS TO JOIN STATEWIDE GIFTED EDUCATION LIST-SERV
WISGIFT-L is an e-mail list designed for discussion of issues related to gifted children and gifted education in Wisconsin. This list is a cooperative project of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and WATG. If you have email, all you have to do to subscribe to the list is follow the three steps below. You will receive a welcome message from UW-Whitewater confirming your subscription.

If you want to join from two different e-mail accounts, send the message twice - once from each of your e-mail addresses.

To POST A MESSAGE to the list: just send an email message as you normally would, using the address WISGIFT-L@listmanager.uww.edu (NOTE: you never have to post a message if you don't want to - you can simply subscribe and read the messages that are posted to the list.) It is very helpful to the reader if, when you post a message, you place a subject in the subject line.
WISGIFT-L is an unmoderated list, which means that messages can be posted to it from anyone who cares to subscribe. Appropriate messages (from parents, teachers & administrators, and gifted children themselves) might include requests for ideas or resources, job announcements, advocacy or legislative information, and notices of upcoming events. Reasonable netiquette (net etiquette) is expected.
Guidelines for WATG Forums and Wisconsin Gifted Listserv
The Wisconsin Association for Talented and Gifted (WATG) promotes and maintains two technology resources to facilitate the discussion of issues, news, and advocacy for gifted education in Wisconsin. As these resources evolve, it is important for users to differentiate which material belongs with which resource. The guidelines below will help users to determine which resource to use for their varying needs.
WATG Forums:
The WATG Forums are an online community representing advocates, educators, parents, and other supporters of gifted education. The advantage of using the WATG Forums is that content is archived, so discussions of recurring topics (such as those related to assessment and curriculum) can be easily accessed by members when necessary. Users should post material consisting OF (though not limited) to the following:
- Questions/discussion relating to gifted education best practice
- Questions/discussion relating to the assessment and identification of gifted children
- Questions/ discussion relating to parenting gifted children
- Questions/discussion relating to the social/emotional needs of gifted children
- Websites, links to articles, and other online content relating to gifted education
- Non-time-sensitive news relating to gifted education
Wisconsin Gifted Listserv (WISGIFT-L):
The Wisconsin Gifted Listserv (WISGIFT-L) is an e-mail list designed to connect advocates, educators, parents, and other supporters of gifted education on issues and news that is more time-sensitive. Users should post material consisting of the following:
- Announcements/reminders of professional development opportunities including workshops, conferences, special speakers, and university coursework
- Class/coursework/opportunities for gifted children
- Time-sensitive news or advocacy opportunities
- First notice of job openings in gifted education
Please use this guide to determine the best venue for your topic.
MORE USAGE TIPS
1. Think carefully before just hitting "REPLY." Does your message really need to go to a couple of hundred people (everyone on the list, which is where "reply" goes on a list-serv) or just to one person? If just to one person, please take the time to create a "new message" to that person's individual e-mail address.
2. If you do want to use "reply," which is often the case, it is a courtesy to list-serv members to make sure that the SUBJECT line matches the topic of your message. Just delete & replace if needed.
3. You can only post a message onto the list from the precise e-mail ADDRESS you used to join the list. You are welcome to join from more than one computer or e-mail account. Please re-join (or let me know) if your e-mail address changes.
4. When ATTACHING documents, the safest format for the title of the attachment is a single word (no spaces) followed by .doc. So if you want to attach a document just save a version of it as delisle.doc, giftedlinks.doc, etc. & attach that version. This particularly helps when Windows users try to open a Mac document.
5. Never use AUTOMATIC REPLY MESSAGES if you belong to any list-serv. If you set your computer to respond to all incoming e-mail that you are "out of the office" for a week, it will send that message to everyone on the list-serv every time anyone posts a message to it. (If you want to use an automatic message, just unsubscribe from the list-serv before you leave town and re-subscribe when you return.)
