Nicholas Green 1987-1994
WATG is pleased to announce the Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award Program, designed to recognize excellence in young children.

Nicholas Green was a bright seven year old who was killed in a senseless shooting while vacationing with his family in 1994. His parents, Maggie and Reg Green, wanted to keep his memory alive by recognizing the gifts and talents of children approximately the same age Nicholas was when he died. They donated the savings from their son’s college fund to start the award program with the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC). From 1996 to 2012, the program recognized the accomplishments of one child in each state, each year.

Unfortunately, the funds provided by the Green family and from early donors ran out in 2012. However, WATG has committed to keeping the program alive in our state by administering the selection process, providing a U.S. Savings Bond for the Wisconsin winner, and recognizing him or her at our annual Fall Conference. In turn, the NAGC will issue a national award certificate and send a letter of congratulations to the winner’s parents that includes a one-year parent membership in NAGC. Student award winners will also be recognized on the NAGC website.

With the Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award, WATG aims to inspire children to achieve to their fullest potential, highlight high-ability students, and draw attention to the educational needs of our nation’s gifted and talented students. Award candidates must be in grades 3 - 6 at the time of nomination and may have distinguished themselves in academics, leadership, or the arts.

Do you know a child who needs financial help to participate in a summer enrichment program? Every year WATG supports Wisconsin students who plan to attend camps and classes in a range of fields, including music, engineering, and creative writing. Last year WATG distributed a total of $2,000 to ten worthy applicants.

To apply, fill out our scholarship form and follow the instructions for submitting an essay, program brochure, and references. Applications are due on April 1. Awards vary in amount.

To fund our scholarships, WATG uses investment income supplemented by proceeds from the silent auction and book and merchandise sale at our Fall Conference. WATG welcomes donations to this scholarship fund at any time. Contact our office here or by US Mail at:
